Lo más importante
- Quarterly inspection (owner): accessibility, signage, tamper seal and pressure gauge in the green zone.
- Annual inspection (authorised company): agent weight, valve, hose and inspection label. Mandatory under RIPCI.
- 5-year hydrostatic retesting (authorised company): pressure test that certifies the integrity of the cylinder.
- Maximum service life: 20 years from manufacture date; after that, the extinguisher must be withdrawn mandatorily.
- Only an authorised company registered with the Generalitat de Catalunya may carry out the annual inspection; using an unauthorised company has no legal validity.
Fire extinguishers are the first resource available to tackle an incipient fire. They are present in homes, communities of owners, offices, shops, industrial facilities and vehicles. But an extinguisher is only useful if it is in good condition and properly maintained.
In this complete guide we cover everything you need to know about fire extinguisher maintenance in Catalonia: which types exist, when they must be inspected, what signs indicate they need attention, and what the RIPCI regulation says. Extinguishers are part of a comprehensive active fire protection system that also includes fire hose reels (BIEs), sprinklers and automatic fire detection.
Types of extinguishers and their uses
Before discussing maintenance, it is important to know the most common types of extinguishers and what they are designed for:
ABC powder extinguisher
The most common and versatile. Suitable for fires involving solids (A), liquids (B) and gases (C). This is what you will find in most communities of owners and businesses in Catalonia. Available in formats from 1 kg to 12 kg.
CO₂ extinguisher
Uses carbon dioxide as the extinguishing agent. Ideal for electrical fires and liquid fires in enclosed spaces, as it leaves no residue. Common in offices with IT equipment, laboratories and electrical panels.
Water-mist extinguisher
Effective on solid fires and certain liquids. Leaves no toxic residue. Increasingly used in office buildings and commercial establishments in Barcelona and Tarragona.
Lithium extinguisher (ECO Fire)
Specifically designed for lithium battery fires. Increasingly needed in parkings with EV charging points. A relatively new but essential solution in today's Catalonia.
Mandatory maintenance calendar
The RIPCI (RD 513/2017) sets a clear and mandatory maintenance calendar for all extinguishers. Failure to comply can lead to fines and, even more importantly, put people's safety at risk.
Quarterly inspection (extinguisher owner)
Every three months, the owner or person in charge of the extinguisher must perform a visual inspection that includes:
- Checking the extinguisher's accessibility (no obstacles)
- Verifying that signage is visible
- Checking the tamper seal and the pressure gauge needle (must be in the green zone)
- Reviewing the general condition of the extinguisher (corrosion, knocks, hose)
Anyone can perform this inspection. It does not require an authorised company, but keeping a record is recommended.
Annual inspection (authorised company)
Every 12 months, an authorised installer company must carry out a complete inspection that includes:
- Verification of all points of the quarterly inspection
- Checking the weight of the extinguishing agent (detecting leaks)
- Verifying the condition of the valve and hose
- Pressure check using a calibration gauge
- Issuing an inspection label with the date
5-year hydrostatic retesting (authorised company)
Retesting is a mandatory hydrostatic pressure test that certifies the extinguisher cylinder maintains its structural integrity. It is performed every 5 years from the manufacture date, for a maximum of 20 years (the extinguisher's maximum service life).
Maximum service life: 20 years
After 20 years from the manufacture date, the extinguisher must be withdrawn from service mandatorily, regardless of its apparent condition.
RIPCI maintenance calendar summary
| Inspection | Frequency | Responsible | What it covers | |---|---|---|---| | Visual accessibility check | Quarterly | Owner | Free access, signage, seal, green gauge, general condition | | Complete technical inspection | Annual | RIPCI-authorised company | Agent weight, valve, hose, gauge pressure, label | | Hydrostatic retesting | Every 5 years | RIPCI-authorised company | Structural pressure test of the cylinder | | Mandatory withdrawal | At 20 years | RIPCI-authorised company | Mandatory replacement with a new extinguisher |
Signs that an extinguisher needs attention
Even between scheduled inspections, there are signs indicating an extinguisher may not be working correctly:
- Gauge in the red zone: indicates pressure loss. The extinguisher may not discharge the agent.
- Visible corrosion: rust on the body, base or valve. Weakens the cylinder's structure.
- Cracked or deformed hose: may not withstand pressure when the extinguisher is activated.
- Broken tamper seal without reason: indicates someone has tampered with the extinguisher. Must be verified.
- Expired inspection label: means the mandatory annual inspection has not been performed.
If you detect any of these signs, contact an authorised extinguisher maintenance company in Catalonia.
RIPCI regulation in Catalonia
The Regulation of Fire Protection Installations (RIPCI), approved by Royal Decree 513/2017, regulates the installation, maintenance and manufacture of extinguishers throughout Spain. In Catalonia, the municipal ordinances of Barcelona, Tarragona and other cities also apply, which may set additional requirements.
Key points of the regulation:
- Extinguishers must be approved and certified (CE marking)
- They must be installed at a maximum height of 1.70 m from the floor
- The maximum travel distance to an extinguisher is 15 metres
- Maintenance must be performed by a company registered in the authorised register of the regional administration
- All inspections must be documented
These same documentation and frequency requirements apply to other PCI system equipment, such as Equipped Fire Hose Reels (BIE), whose installation and maintenance regulation we explain in detail.
Practical advice
For households
- Have at least one 2 kg ABC powder extinguisher in an accessible location (kitchen or corridor)
- Know the basic operation: remove the seal, squeeze the levers, aim the hose at the base of the fire
- Keep a record of purchase date and inspections
For communities of owners
- Set up a maintenance contract with an authorised company in Catalonia
- Designate someone responsible for quarterly visual inspections
- Maintain a record of all interventions
- Ensure your insurance policy covers the extinguishers and their maintenance
For businesses and industrial facilities
- Contract an integrated preventive maintenance plan covering all PCI equipment
- Train staff in extinguisher use and evacuation procedures
- Conduct evacuation drills at least once a year
- Document all maintenance for regulatory inspections
